Staycation Part 1

So summer is quickly winding down and the boyfriend and I have both been working our asses off at multiple jobs. We wanted to take a vacation but we are both broke as shit, so instead we planned a staycation to wrap up the summer. He missioned to Toronto from London, where he lives, on Saturday night to kick off our week. And now I’m going to tell you about it thus far, because if I wait until the week is over a) it’ll be so long that no one will want to read it, and more importantly, b) it’ll be so long that I will be too lazy to type it.

So. Saturday night Riley got in pretty late, so we just rented Insidious and stayed in. It was.. entertaining. As a movie? Horrible, horrible film. But seriously fun to watch. The concept is a young boy’s soul wanders a little too far away and spirits that are chilling in some sort of limbo are trying to take over his empty body in some sort of reincarnation. As a story, it was pretty good. The medium woman comes in about halfway through and explains what’s going on, and that part honestly freaked me the shit out. But then you see the ghosts, and it’s like House of Wax meets that reality show starring Ozzy Osbourne. And the “scariest” ghost, the demon that wants his body more than the other ones, appears to just be wearing a Darth Maul mask. Not scary. Anyway. Overall, fun to watch. Nothing more.

Sunday morning we went out to The Purple Onion, a restaurant around the corner from my house. From the outside, it looks sketchy as hell. But the lineup out the door and the multiple awards on the window drew us in, and it was a great choice. Great food, decent prices. Nothing fancy. Perfect for you just want some damn breakfast. Will definitely be going back.

After brunch it was somehow like 4pm and we had to mission to the LCBO, which took most of the afternoon. By then we were tired and lazy so we cooked some gnocchi and watched Just Friends and drank wine and got a little tipsy.

Today we had plans of waking up early, but once again that fell through, so by the time we were up and ready to go, it was lunch time. Which worked out perfectly, because we headed right to The Burger’s Priest  at Queen and Coxwell. It was a serious mission to get there, as I live on the West end, but holy hell, was it ever worth it. I first heard of this place on the cover of Now Magazine when they put out the best burgers issue, and had to see for myself. The burgers are simple, the toppings are sparce, and it’s just plain heaven. And in Googling their website to add the link, I just came across their secret menu. Which means I’ll be making that mission again, and soon. If you live in TO and haven’t been to this place, you are doing it wrong.

After lunch we took the streetcar to Queen West and stopped briefly in The Paper Place where I picked up some weird paper bird thing that I’m not sure what to do with but seemed really cool at the time.

Then we hopped on the bus to the CNE. I love the Ex. It will never get old. We rode the ferris wheel, played some games (resulting in Riley winning a giant mammoth and me being given an ugly little frog out of pity) and ate anything and everything. Including a deep fried Mars bar, which I am pretty sure shaved 5 years off of my lifespan.

Anyway. Four days left :D

xo.

One Response to Staycation Part 1

  1. I had a deep fried Mars bar @ Havelock last year.
I was a little drunk and a LOT disappointed with it.
I’m glad yours was better <3
